Bregman selected for MLB Home Run Derby

BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA) - Former LSU shortstop Alex Bregman will not only attend his first Major League Baseball All-Star Game, he'll also be in the field of eight at the MLB Home Run Derby on July 16th.

Bregman currently leads the Houston Astros in home runs(19) going into the All-Star break.

The former Tiger was also named the AL Player of the Month in June, after raising his average thanks to a .306 batting average during the month.

Last year, he manned third base as the Astros won their first World Series Championship in franchise history.

Here is what had to say about Bregman inside the announcement:

He's already matched his 2017 home run total, and he did it in more than 200 fewer plate appearances. After going deep just one time in his first 34 games this season, Bregman has surged with 18 homers since May 6. Perhaps his Derby pitcher should look to pitch him up, because 16 of his homers have come against pitches in the middle or upper thirds of the strike zone.

The All-Star Game will follow on July 17th in Washington D.C.
