BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA / WGMB) - Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler has resigned following the publication of emails in which he is alleged to have sexually harassed a department employee.
Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler's sent his resignation letter to Governor Edwards and announced that he is stepping down on Tuesday, May 8.
Senator John Kennedy said that "Tom did the right thing by resigning."
Governor John Edwards released this statement about the resignation of Secretary of State Schedler:
“Given the serious nature of the allegations, in February, I called on Secretary of State Tom Schedler to resign. In light of the additional information that has been disclosed, I believe this is the best course of action for Tom, his family, and the state of Louisiana.”
Today's announcement comes after the Governor and other state leaders asked Secretary of State Schedler to step down earlier this year.
First Assistant Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin will take Secretary of State Tom Schedler's place next week and he will remain Secretary of State until the Governor calls a special election.
According to the Secretary of State's Office, the next available congressional or statewide election dates "are the Mid-Term Congressional Elections scheduled for November 6, 2018 and December 8, 2018."
