BATON ROUGE — Despite giving up 13 points on defense, Southern University fell to the Alcorn State University Braves 20-3 Saturday night at the A.W. Mumford Stadium., snapping the Jaguars undefeated streak on field turf.

On a night where the defense held Alcorn State offense to 13-points, Southern’s offense sputtered netting 139 offensive yards, their lowest output of the season.

Devon Benn led the Jags offense with 80 total yards (60 rushing, 20 Receiving). John Lampley struggled, going 9-for-26 with one interception for 59 yards.

The bright spot was the defense and special teams. The defense held a potent Alcorn offense to three points in the first half, creating two first-half turnovers and three punts.

Leading 3-0, Alcorn came out of intermission blazing, scoring the game’s first touchdown on a 4-play, 58-yard drive capped off by a De’Shawn Waller one-yard touchdown run.

Southern answered back on the next drive, taking advantage of Chris Chaney 60-yard kick-off return to the Alcorn State 18-yard line. The Braves defense held strong, forcing the Jaguars to settle for a 28-yard Martell Fontenot field goal to cut the lead to 10-3.

Alcorn put the game out of reach on the Jaguars next offensive possesion, taking a John Lampley pass to the house, extending the lead, 17-3.

The Braves added a field goal in the fourth to cap the scoring at 20-3.

Tonight’s loss was the first loss on the turf field in A.W. Mumford Stadium, snapping a span of ten consecutive home wins. The last home loss came to Alcorn in 2015.

Southern will have a week off, before heading to Prairie View, Texas to face Prairie View A&M University in the Panthers 2018 home opener. PVAMU defeated Grambling 22-16 to give GSU their first conference loss in two years.
