The speed limit on I-49 within the urbanized area of Alexandria was raised on Tuesday by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
The speed limit between approximately Broadway Avenue north to the US Highway 71 interchange is increasing from 60 to 65 miles per hour. The remaining portions of I-49 currently posted at 60 mph are increasing to 70 mph.
Speed studies on the area produced results favoring the increase of the posted speed limit.
According to a press release by DOTD, speed limits that align with the 85th percentile speed of drivers have been proven to create safer roadways. It also allows traffic to flow more efficiently along a regional corridor.
DOTD is working with local law enforcement as the change goes into effect. Motorists should be aware of the increase and drive with caution.
