The annual Gingerbread House Contest winners were announced at noon on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Center, 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive.
The contest, held in conjunction with the annual Southwest Louisiana Christmas Lighting Festival, features awards in different categories including amateurs and school groups. Southwest Louisiana’s goodwill ambassador and mascot, Gumbeaux Gator was on hand to take pictures with the winners. Maplewood Elementary Choir, under the direction of Mel Yorks, also entertained guests with a holiday performance.
This year, entries highlighted themes such as the Eiffel Tower, The Three Little Pigs, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and The Wizard of Oz.
In the Children’s division, Ariauna Loy won first place, and first place went to Logan Sensat in the Teen Division.
In the Pre-School/Kindergarten Division, Amber Green’s class from Kaufman Elementary took first place. Heather Lawson’s class from Kaufman Elementary School came in second, and Tina Harris’ class from Kaufman Elementary School came in third.
In the Elementary School Division, the W.T. Henning 4H Club took first place. Second place went to the J.I. Watson Elementary Art Club, and Megan Telles’ class from Kaufman Elementary placed third.
In the Middle School Division, Jamie Roberts’ class from Iowa Middle School captured the first place vote. Vinton Middle School’s Art Club came in second, and W.W. Lewis Builders Club took third place.
Taking home first place in the High School Division was Lexi Fontenot’s Class from Sam Houston High School. Second place went to College Street Vocational Center.
In the Club/Organization Division, Girl Scout Troup #401 placed first.
The Best of Show went to Jamie Roberts’ Class from Iowa Middle School. Their entry featured The Wizard of Oz, complete with the Emerald City, a field of poppies, the Yellow Brick Road, the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and other characters.
The winning gingerbread houses will remain on display at the bureau throughout the month of December. Residents and tourists visiting the Welcome Center may vote on the “People’s Choice Award.” The winners will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau.
