CLTCC Delaying Graduation Ceremony Due to COVID-19

Alexandria, La., May 5, 2020 — Due to restrictions regarding large public gatherings as the state tries to reduce the spread of the COVID-19, Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) officials have decided to postpone the college-wide graduation ceremony scheduled for May 21 in Alexandria. No new date has been set at this time.

“The graduation experience is extremely important to our students, and we want to do everything we can to appropriately celebrate our CLTCC graduates,” said CLTCC Chancellor Jimmy Sawtelle. “Our plan is that later this year conditions will improve to the point where we can have a safe, in-person graduation event where our graduates can walk across the stage and receive their diploma and the recognition they have worked so hard to earn.”

William Tulak, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, said the delay in holding a graduation ceremony will not affect a graduate’s ability to move on and enter the workforce or move forward to another school to continue their education.

“CLTCC can certify that students have graduated in many different ways,” Tulak said. “Once the semester ends, those students who have completed the coursework will have access to their transcript which they can use in lieu of a diploma to demonstrate completion of the program.”

For students moving on to another school Tulak noted the transcript is the document other schools want as opposed to a diploma. For business employment, a copy of the transcript or letter should suffice. If an employer has questions, Tulak said, “We can always verify the student’s completion of the program in writing.”

While CLTCC has students at eight campuses in 10 parishes across Central Louisiana, the school traditionally holds a single college-wide graduation ceremony at the end of the academic year. The ceremony celebrates graduates from CLTCC’s two-year programs as well as WorkReadyU graduates who successfully complete a high school equivalency. Last year’s graduation ceremony was held at the Pentecostals of Alexandria.

Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) is a two-year technical and community college offering associate degrees, technical diplomas, industry certificates, and customized training in more than 20 disciplines to support local workforce development and prepare students for high-demand and highwage careers. CLTCC serves 10 parishes in Central Louisiana through its eight campuses and provides instruction in one state prison and one federal correctional institution.
