A brand new year of school began in Iberia Parish today and students are already seeing taxpayer dollars at work..

When walking the halls of Loreauville High School, some students got to check out a brand new building on campus.

“We have approximately 278 7th and 8th graders that are in those new classrooms today.” said Karen Bashay, Principal, Loreauville High School.

Not only that, but Loreauville also added a new state of the art synthetic turf field to open the 2015 football season.

“Our band will enjoy it, the cheerleaders, flag corp, dance team and certainly our football players. The community that will come out Friday nights to enjoy high school football will see that this is a great addition to the community.” said Dale Henderson, Iberia Parish Superintenden.

Loreauville’s principal believes these new additions will set the stage for the upcoming year.

”We want continued excellence. Our students always excel. They come and meet the challenges and we also have an excellent staff of teachers. We’re also excited about our new football field.” said Bashay.

Other new additions at Iberia Parish Schools include a brand auditorium at Jeanerette High School.

New Iberia and Westgate High Schools will also no longer be sharing a field.

The two schools will have their own stadiums and turf fields.

“We’ve invested very heavily in academics. We’ve heavily invested heavily in technology and in safety and security and in our facilities.” said Henderson.

These projects were all made possible because of a 50 million dollar bond proposition that the voters supported in 2013.

Superintendent Henderson believes the voters passed the proposal because of the trust the public has in the school board.

“What the voters of Iberia Parish know is that when we put a proposition out there, that’s the work that is going to be done. It will be done to benefit the students in our schools.” said Henderson.

The next big project that the school district plans to tackle is a brand new elementary school on the northside of Loreauville.
