Coast Guard prepares for Tropical Storm Nate

BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA / WGMB) - The Coast Guard is securing its areas and adjusting port conditions along the Gulf Coast to prepare for Tropical Storm Nate.

Mariners are encouraged to monitor local and national weather sources and avoid coastal areas that may be impacted by the storm.

The Coast Guard is urging owners of large boats to move their vessels to inland marinas that will be less vulnerable to breaking free or sustaining damage. Trailer-able boats need to be pulled from the water and tied to trailers. They should also be stored in places not prone to flooding.

During the storm, rescue assistance may not be available. Boaters are urged to listen to storm warnings and take early action to stay safe.

Port Condition Whiskey has been set for  New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. All commercial vessels and barges larger than 500 gross tons and all oceangoing barges and their supporting tugs shall report to the Coast Guard captain of the port their intention to depart or remain in port. They should also complete an application and submit it in writing within 24 hours to the Coast Guard captain of the port to remain in port.

All oceangoing vessels and barges greater than 500 gross tons will be required to depart the ports and head out to sea when Hurricane Condition Yankee is set; generally 24 hours before the on-set of gale force winds. Inland vessels and barges greater than 500 gross tons are required to seek safe refuge in a port outside of the impacted ports.

Mariners can stay updated on the latest port conditions through the Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Homeport website and the Coast Guard Sector Mobile Homeport website
