BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA) - A Louisiana Senate Committee has approved a bill that would raise the state's minimum wage.
Senate Bill 153 was approved 4-2.
State Senator Troy Carter's bill would raise the minimum rage to $8 in 2018 and another fifty cents in 2019.
Louisiana doesn't have a state minimum wage and mirrors the federal minimum wage at $7.25 an hour.
The bill now moves to the full Senate.
“SB 153 is a reasonable measure to remedy the fact that it has been nearly a decade since that last minimum wage increase in Louisiana, despite the rising cost of living over that time. If we say that family values are critical to our way of life here in Louisiana, it’s time to start valuing the hard-working families who contribute a great deal to our communities" said Governor Edwards.
