How to repair water damaged dry wall

Unfortunately, water damage is a common home problem. Water damage can result from a leaky roof, a plumbing issue or flooding. So what do you do when your dry wall gets wet? Follow these tips.

If the dry wall is intact, meaning there are no bubbles and it's still firm to the touch, you might be able to save the dry wall. Also, if the water that leaked was clean. If sewage or flood waters hit the walls, then you'll likely need to remove it. To remove it, you should likely seek the help of a professional as it can be difficult and dangerous to cut into the wall.

If you can salvage the walls, the first step is to dry it out. Mold can grow within days of the water damage, so you want to act fast. Set up fans to keep the air circulating, and use de-humidifiers to remove the moisture from the air. This will help dry out the dry wall, while also working to prevent mold growth.

It can take several days to weeks - depending on how much damage was done - to completely dry out the dry wall.

Once the walls are dry, there will likely be water stains. To cover these, you can't just use regular paint, as the stains will seep through. You will need to use a special type of primer that will conceal the stains. Once the primer is applied, then the walls can be painted with regular paint to match the rest of the room.
